O.K., my school has this really strict Honor Code (we actually have to write it on every test and some homework, though not for this). For a language class, we had to write a short story, which had to be about apage long or so. I worked really hard on mine for days. It ended up being over two whole pages! I was really happy with how it turned out, at least until I talked to some of my friends. They had like four pages, and it turned out that they hadn't really been working on it at all. They had just used online translators to translate a complicated story from English to Spanish. It made me feel really bad because I had worked so hard (and I got praised for it, that at least made me happy), and so many other people cheated. Also, I'm worried that I'm lying to people, particularly my teacher, because of our Honor Code: "I have not violated nor witnessed a violation of the Honor Code." I did witness a violation, but I'm afraid of ratting people out. What should I do?

Well, usually online translators don't even translate the right way. they just take each word and translate it, not the whole scentence which would make the grammar wrong. Maybe they're not your friends if they cheat and lie to your teacher? I am proud of you for doing the right thing and I actually think that you will probably end up getting a better grade than them. I would advise staying after school and going to either your guidance counselor or actual teacher and telling them the truth but don't use any names unless they ask you. I promise that you will feel a lot better. Your friends on the other hand won't find out unless somehow your name leaks out to them and if they do find out they will eventually get over it and you will still be friends... :)

You already know what to do. You just want the rest of us to reaffirm your instincts.

Talk to the teacher, or let him/her know anonymously. You're signing a statement of Honor, that means that your word is on the line because you signed it knowing that it was false. They've already broken the Honor code with the teacher. Don't feel so bad about it, you have no such written Honor code with your "friends".

In the business world, it's known as "whistleblowing", and is protected by law.

Besides, I've read some of these online translators, and they're awful. Same with essays sold to students over the internet.

I don't think your teacher is so stupid he can't figure out what is going on. And I'll bet you a dollar to a donut your teacher knows you did a real job. If you must talk to someone, talk to your guidance councilor.

Don't do it. Karma will get back at them. For now, feel good that you did the work, it will probably show.
