What I think is....

If she has been trying for 12 months to conceive on her own unsuccessfully...

Then she should be classified as having primary infertility and she should request a referral to a fertility specialist.

Losing 20 pounds is a great idea if she's looking to fit into a smaller dress size by next summer...

But if she wants to get pregnant... She needs to find out WHY she's not conceiving. Her weight doesn't seem to be enough of a concern to continue wasting time believing that losing might help - when in reality, it probably isn't even an issue. Does she have regular menstral cycles? And even if so, that doesn't guarantee she's ovulating on her own. You can have periods without ovulation. There are also a thousand other things that can be just "off" enough to prevent a pregnancy. Not all of them are scary or complicated.

Encourage her to seek out the advice and opinion of another doctor... and inquire about seeing if her insurance would cover for a fertility specialist referral.

Best of luck to your sister. Re-assure her that overweight women conceive everyday and carry to term a happy, healthy baby. Also, at 140 pounds and 5' 4", she's actually "within range" for a healthy weight... I think her doctor is nuts.

I too was overweight the 4 times I got pregnant. Didn't seem to be an issue for me either. Some women do have difficulty getting and staying pregnant if overweight. So yes it does matter. It is also more difficult to delivery if you are overweight. You should limit your weight gain during pregnancy to no more than 25-30 pounds total. If you are overweight and think you can lose weight during the pregnancy, generally your doctor will tell you no. But if you can manage to not gain any weight, after you deliver and return for your 6 week exam, you will have lost the 25-30 pounds of unwanted extra weight.
During pregnancy you should be eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, meats, milk and breads but not fast food or junk food. Your baby needs good nutrition, not excess calories. And baby needs you to be eating 6 small meals rather than the 3 large meals we Americans tend to eat.

I hope the doctor mentioned that your sister needs to lose the 20 lbs SLOWLY! Her body could go into shock from an extreme change in eating habits and weight and her cycles could become messed up. My doctor told me to gain weight before trying - so it probably all depends on what's right for individual people. Perhaps your sister is a different shape than you are? 5'4'' and 140 isn't terribly overweight I think.

Some people say it does, others say it doesn't, but if her doctor has said to lose some weight then he/she has said it for a reason.
Sometimes if people stop 'trying' to get pregnant and place more emphasis on just having a good sex life then a lot of the time you can get pregnant. Its your body not getting too stressed that helps you to get pregnant, so if you stop wanting and start waiting, you may get a better deal.

Good Luck, but do as you have been told by your doctor.

the healthier you are the msore likely to conceive. maybe you're just lucky but 140 isnt too terribly over weight. being over weight can effect your ovulation cycle but not always. besides being overweight and pregnant can cause serious health problem in pregnancy

Each womans body produces the correct hormones according to its own particular design. Yours doesnt care bout the weight- hers might.

Her body might consider it too stressful to be overweight, and so it wont allow her to get or stay pregnant past conception.

my weight was more than ideal when i got pregnant. didn't take long at all either. everyone's different. it could help her, but i doubt that's the problem. i'd seek a 2nd opinion. also, tell her to try the ovulation kits if she hasn't already. clear blue is great.
