The phrase is "couldn't care less". i.e. there is no possible way that I could care about (whatever) any less than I do now.

The phrase "I could care less" was said with sarcasm. However, over the years, the scarcasm has kind of dropped off. It means the same as "couldn't care less", but that is not obvious becase no one says it sarcastically anymore.

Seems odd that two opposite things mean the same thing, until you realize that "could care less" is supposed to be sarcastic.

They are not the same. If you say "I couldn't care less," that means you already care so little that you "couldn't" possibly care less than you do now. If you say "I could care less," that means you already don't care much or maybe you care a little but you "could" still care less than you do now. Two completely different statements. "Could" and "couldn't" mean the opposite. As english_guy_1985 says, Americans do tend to get it wrong. And for most people, I don't think it has much at all to do with sarcasm. They just repeat what they hear others say. I'm an American, by the way.

Of course I care. But i could care no less about whether or not other people couldn't care less

No... I couldnt care less means you're already at ur limit of caring about the situation.

I could care less means that if I try I could care even less about it than I do now.

"I could care less if I wanted to make the effort to do so"

Does that make sense?? =}

I noticed that Americans tend to say 'could care less' instead of 'couldn't care less'.

It's strange, sorry.... :-P

edit: oh, it's meant to be sarcasm? ok I get it now lol..

if you say....i could care less....i think it means you care somewhat....so it's best to say...i couldnt care less...which would mean you dont care at all
