It was supposed to be "a fortnight and odd days" before Lammas-tide, which is supposed to be August 1. Since they don't say exactly how many days, figure 2 1/2 weeks before August 1.

The play itself covers only three or four days.

The action of the play takes place over a few days. To find out the day on which it starts, go to Act One, Scene Three.

In that scene, the Nurse asks, "how long is it now to Lammas-tide?" (Just one "L" on "Lammas" -- this has nothing to do with those animals from the Andes.) Lady Capulet replies, "A fortnight and odd days."

As you may already know, a fortnight is two weeks (fourteen nights and fourteen days). So the the first day of the play is two weeks and odd days -- that is, more than two weeks but less than three -- before Lammas-tide.

Now all you have to do is look up Lammas, a holiday that doesn't get much attention nowadays. Once you know its date, you know that the action of "Romeo & Juliet" starts roughly half a month before that.
