It is awesome.

It is one of those situations where you get out of it whatever you put into it, but peopel have formed lifelong meaningful friendships based on an exchange experience as a young person.

Be sure to describe yourself honestly and give peopel a chance to match you up carefully with a caring host family.

If you believe in world peace, this is one of the true organizations that have accomplished something for many years.

The chances are you might get a great family who will love you tons, and will be willing to help, but i think (and most of my AFS buddies agree) that at least for the japanese exchange program, as soon as you're in the other country AFS leaves you for dead, and contacts you like twice a year. And whatever problems you might find wil be up to you and your adoptive family. But yet again, it just depends on the situation. Mostly I admit that my own experience was not so good on teh AFS side, but my family and Japan changed my life completely, and were tottally worth the risk!

I went abroad with AFS and then chaired the chapter in my city. I had lots of different (good and bad) experiences but even though it can get very tough i definetly recomend anyone try to do it, you really end up learning so much and being a more complete person.
