accuracy of a fetal fibronectin test ? does anyone have any experiences after getting one?

I am 33 weeks pregnant and have been having , preterm labor symptoms. My doc did a fetal fibronectin test and the results were
posative .I am wondering how accurate this test is ? The doc never gives me alot of info or details .I don't want to go crazy on bed rest not really knowing what to expect . This is my first pregnancy . Does any one have any experiences they could share with me or know anything about the test ?

I'm in the same boat. I'm almost 34 weeks, due Jan 1, went into preterm labor at 30 weeks and have been on bed rest ever since. I've had the fetal fibronectin test each week, the first 2 weeks it was negative, the 3rd it was positive and last week it was negative again. The test is more valuable when it's negative, a positive result doesn't tell much. According to my doctor and some research I've done, a negative means you should not go into labor within 7 days, a positive does NOT mean that you will, it just means a protein is present that women have when they are in labor. Your doctor may have you get steroid shots just as a precaution for the baby's lungs, but once you make it to 34 weeks, the lungs should be ok without drugs. Just try to relax, do the whole bed rest thing, and know at this point your baby should be fine, maybe small, but each week you get through is a mile stone for your little one. Good luck!

positive test is not as helpful as a negative one. if negative, the doc can be pretty sure you are not going to have preterm labor any time soon. a positive test however, does not necessarily mean that you are definitely going to have preterm labor-maybe you will, maybe you wont-time will tell. so you can see why it is important to follow your doctors directions, they are being cautious for you and the baby
