There's no right or wrong time to put up the decorations, just put them up when you're ready to get into the Christmas spirit.
If that means putting them up a week before Christmas, then do so.
If you have a tradition of putting them up after the American Thanksgiving, then continue with your tradition.
If you want to put them up right after Halloween, go right ahead.
I've had one of my two trees up for a week now, and I've just put up the exterior lights this weekend, though they won't be lit until December.
Decorate your home when you feel ready and ignore all the Grinches out there who feel people should only display decorations when they're ready to see them.

My mom and I have the tradition of putting up the Christmas tree the weekend after Thanksgiving. We try to get the lights and garland and all the lawn decor out that same weekend but for some reason we always end up putting it out on the coldest weekend of the year. :) I think its a great time. But we do make sure we give Thanks for everything we have first. Happy Holidays!

Well we don't all have thanksgiving around the world - the beginning of advent is the time to put up your decorations usually around Dec 1st but keep to your traditions.
