99% of the country speaks Japanese, but in Hokkaido (Northern Japan) there is still a small Ainu population and they speak their own language.
There are also different dialects of Japanese, but unlike chinese dialects, they are mutually intelligeable by other Japanese people from other parts of the country without much trouble.

According to my 5year old nephew...he wants to move to China so he can speak Japanese. But he hates going to the flea market because everyone there speaks Spanish! LOL
