y - 9 = 12
y = 12 + 9
y = 21
Another way is to cover the y with your hand then ask your sister what number must be under your hand such that number minus 9 = 12.
Try it with a few easy questions first such as:-
x - 5 = 3
Cover the x with your hand
Ask what number must be under your hand
Answer is 8 so x = 8

You can add 9 to both sides of the equals sign and still have the equation be true (1=1, 1+9 = 1+9)
y-9 = 2
y-9+9 = 2+9
y+0 = 11
y = 11

Y - 9 = 2.
This is the extended version of the way to do it.
Add 9 to both sides*
Y - 9 (+9) = 2 (+9)
Since -9 + 9 = 0,
Y=2 + 9
Thus,
Y=11

Ok, y-9=2.
All you have to do is add the two numbers together. The answer would then be 11 right? Or you could just try different numbers like this: hmm 10-9=1, okay can't be that. You're on eoff the number and it can't be 9 so it must be 11, get it? Sorry, I'm bad at explaining but I hope this helped.

Normally, following basic rules of Algebra, the solution is:
y-9=12: So, add 9 to both sides of the equation and get:
y-9+9=12+9, which becomes: y=21. Another way is to "transpose" the -9 to the Right hand side of the equation and get: y=12+9; it's +9 because the Sign changes when you "transpose" the -9 to the Right hand side of the equation.
Good luck.

y-9=2
1. You need to add 9 to both sides.
y-9 = 2
+9 +9
2. The 9's on the left side cancel out and 2 + 9 = 11.
Answer: y=11

tell her that she is trying to get the 9 all by itself.
then ask her what is in the way of "y" being all by itself (-9)
then ask her how to get rid of a -9 (add 9)
tell her to do that to both sides.
then y should be by itself
the equation will break down like this
y-9=2
y-9+9=2+9
y=11

Don't know if I can do any better, but in solving for y
What minus 9 can equal 12?
12 +9 = 21 so
21-9= 12
I hope that helps. Crap now I'm scared. heck I hope that's right.
