When I plug in the adapter the light comes on for about a minute then turns off. As soon as I turn it on it shuts off. Do I just need a new adapter or battery? I don't think it's my battery because the laptop will not work even if it is plugged in.

Well, you either need a new adapter or battery!!

Well, it could be both..The battery, if fully charged, should run the laptop without the AC charger. The fact that neither will power your laptop says that either both are bad or..the AC adapter is not charging the battery, hence when you turn it on it dies because the AC adapter is bad and the battery is not being charged. Try for a new adapter first..If it runs the laptop, see if it will charge the battery. If the battery will not charge then you will need to replace it at some point..
Good luck~!!

sounds like you have a bad adapter, see if you can borrow one to make sure, some adapters are universal and will work on more then one brand of laptops, the battery might not be fully charged if the adapter isn't working properly

the laptop should power on and run with the battery out if it is the power supply... if it does not work, it is the power supply!
