to me, the fact that Louisiana is a state is irrelevant as I'm french and not many people know US states by name... Secondly, the other three names are French and quite common here. My partner however is English and we think that French names go well with the English language, reason why I'm asking people's opinion.

I think Amelie is pretty friggin' pretentious, as is Maelys. Océane is AWFUL. Louisiana is the worst of the lot. Good luck to your poor unsuspecting baby.

Amelie is the best, definitely. Maelys is very cute said aloud, but looks very hard to pronounce on paper. Oceane is another great name, but I like it better as a middle name - Amelie Oceane would be gorgeous (I've always loved double vowel names). Even though I'm from the US, I actually see the potential in a name like Louisiana - it's a twist on the same-old Louisa and Louise. Still, if I had to pick, I would go with Amelie - very easy to pronounce in English and just beautiful. And if she ever happens to come to the US, she won't get a lot of crap from the name Louisiana.

Good luck!

PS I can't believe the reactions you're getting from some of these answers! No wonder America is the laughingstock of the world. Wake up, the US is NOT the center of the universe. People think Amelie is a bad name, but they name their kids Jaidyon and Precious? Ew.

PPS I love how someone said Amelie sounds too French... to a French person.

The only problem with names like the ones you have mentioned is people think they have chosen a name which no-one else has thought of, but in fact everyone HAS, and has the same idea. Examples of names everyone thought were original years ago, which then became very common: India, Poppy, Holly, Georgia. How many people are called that now!? The other problem with names like that is they become dated after a few years, also they ebd up being shortened all the time as no-one can be bothered to keep pronouncing them and thet end up sounding cheap, e.g. Am, Ma, Oss, Lou. If you don't believe they become common, my friend's sister has just called her baby Amelie!

If you live in the US or English-speaking Canada, I'd go with Amelie, as it is familiar in both languages. (And quite pretty in both, too.)

But if you're in France or another French-speaking nation, Oceane is lovely - exotic and yet familiar at once. I just think that in the US, you'd hear her called O-shun. Not nearly as pretty as O-ss-eh-ann. So it doesn't cross cultures as gracefully as Amelie.

Louisiana is just a long name. Five syllables is a bit much no matter what the name's origins. And Maelys is pretty, but not as strong as Amelie and Oceane, IMO.

None of them, Amelie sounds too French and the others all have a weird vibe to them. And who would want to be named after a state in america, is that fair to the kid? The other two would most likely see the child having the piss ripped at school.

Despite Amelie sounding too French, it has to be about the best out the four you posted.

I love the name Amelie and Oceane is really pretty and unusual, haven't heard it before.
I don't really like Louisiana, I'm not a fan of babies being named after places but at the end of the day, as long as you are happy with it, that's what counts.
