Martin Luther was in the Catholic church and one example that kind of speaks to his purpose is that he didn't believe a person should have to confess their sins to another human as in Catholic confession. He felt a personal relationship with God and telling God was good enough. The Lutherans and many other Protestant religions see many Catholic traditions as man made. I am not criticizing, but like they couldn't eat meat on Fridays for years and years and years and then POof, it was just fine, I don't think that rule came from the Bible, It was stuff like that. Catholics and Lutheran's really "oppose" each other theologically. Catholicism is an oligarchy,(a form of government in which all power is vested in a few persons or in a dominant class or clique; government by the few. .. the priests have the FINAL say, not the people of the church) !! and also try wikipedia for martin Luther, wikipedia seems to give simple easy to understand yet factual answers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther

Martin Luther branched off from the Catholic Church and formed Protestantism, which translated Bibles from Latin to the language of the people so that Priests were no longer needed for salvation. He felt salvation came from within, not from confession, penance and indulgences. He believed that the Pope and the clergy held too much power and sought to limit the church hierarchy. Above all, he is the father of Protestantism.

some great answers here ,, martin Luther was so guilt ridden for his sins ,, he had whipped himself sooo many times deprived himself of food all to have good works worthy of salvation! bibles were scarce for if they were wide spread people would realize all the church had instituted was wrong and the coffers would be a lot less .. they had added soo much like paying money for prayers so that your dead loved one could get out of purgatory, money you could pay to have a sin for given , the rich loved that one, etc etc.. ,, Luther one time in a monastery found a bible and it was chained to a wall . IT WAS THEN THAT LUTHER SPENT TIME STUDYING THE BIBLE .. ,, . DUNNO WHEN EXACTLY IT HIT HIM THAT ALL THESE PENANCES WERE NOT NECASARY I HAD HEARD HE WAS CRAWLING UP SOME STEEPS STEPS AND PRAYING AND ALL OF A SUDDEN he was struck with thes words in his mind THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH AND THEN WALKED DOWN THE STAIRS ..
martin luther hadnt wanted to start a new movement he only wanted the church he loved to reform .. what they were doing and saying was not according to GODS word .. priests were lying and were taking advantage of the poor , in more ways then one , in which i dont feel its necasary to get into here. HIS infamous , acccording to the catholic church, 95 thesis he nailed to a church monastary door whew that was too much, talking too much here!. was martin luther perfect ?? noo U HAVE TO REMEMBER IN THE MIDDLE 1500'S THEIR HAD BEEN OVER 1000 YEARS OF FOLKS LIVING IN SPIRITUAL DARKNESS,, no bibles . if u were found with any biblical literature it was punished by death! ,, the LORD at this time WAS LEADING a movement of reformation not just with martin luther but with others in switzerland and other countries oops to long here

He started a new branch of Christianity, the Protestants. He inspired a simpler form of worship as opposed to the Catholics and their extravagant holidays and things that he thought made no sense.

I do know that he brought hope to the black people and some even say other races too. He believed with the faith in the lord anything and everything is possible. He did not believe in violence. He told people to stand up for their rights. When he died I bet the Angels were there in droves to lead him up to the gates of heaven.
