I have been to India many times and will keep going there, but it saddens me that when I give a gift to them, which comes from my heart, which I believe that is something pretty or something that they will really like and it has cost me as much as I can afford, their only comment to me is "is it real gold and what is the value" When I say that perhaps no it is not real gold etc they just give a small smile and say oh well, nice and they do not use what I have bought. I am doing Christmas presents up to send out to them, but before I had a chance, I had an email from one saying where are my gifts I need them for Christmas. This person took it as their right to have a gift sent to them. What I would like to ask people on here from the Indian community, is please can you explain what many are like this towards me when all I have done is to give them gifts when they have never received any before and show love to the people in the poorer areas, people that believed they had been forgotten.

welcome to India, like you i did the same thing, made friends gave them gifts, it was like a slap in the face when i got letters off them asking if i could bring them this and that, nothing they could not get from India itself. have turned a bit cynical ..now, never give gifts. seen too many people being ripped off by so called good friends. India is a wonderful place and will always go back on holiday, but no longer will i be a soft touch. i cannot comprehend their selfishness

This is not true always. Peole sometimes seek gifts but most of the people bother about love.
The presenting Gift is a old tradition here. You can not wipe out it in a minute. This is also true poor people. I have seen that the poor people ever put much more important gifts than their richer analogs. But it is of no doubt that people seek the love and respect the most.

1.there was a time not long ago, when all articles were not available, only source to get them was as a gift from friends returning to india of after stint in a foreign country.
2.cultures differ what is good manners in one country is not so in another.
entering into dinning hall or kitchen wearing footwear is considered bad behaviour on the part of a guest.
expecting a guest to wash dishes after eating,is considered bad manners on the part of the host.
similarly normaly nobody takes a bottle of wine or liquor while attending a party - in india.
there is no universal standard and nor ISO 2000 norms.
do what makes you happy, and may discuss with your friends.
YQ&A is not forum where you should ask such a question,
