The word ''affect'' means to produce a material influence upon or alteration in someone or something; or to bring about a response. For example, ''paralysis affected his legs'', or ''her mind was affected by the anaesthetic''.
As a noun, it is employed in psychology to refer to an emotion or mood and may be ''a facial, vocal, or gestural behavior that serves as an indicator of affect''.
As an adjective, it isthe past participle ''affected'', meaning an artificial display or pretence. "His affected behaviour is irritating to us all.''
As an adverb, ''affectedly'' it can mean artificiality of behaviour, or even affectionate. ''She wept most affectedly (emotionally) when she found her kitten was dead''; 'He smiled affectedly (hypocritically) to disguise he dislike of them.''
Affect is more commonly used as a verb (first example) or as an adverb. It is not usually employed as a noun in everyday speech as it its meaning as a noun is quite specific to the discipline of psychology.

I looked in the dictionary. As a verb, the first meaning is "to have an effect on."
As a noun, the only definition is "an emotion or emotional response."
Actually, I'm a little concerned about giving an example because I get affect and effect confused. Do a search on Yahoo for more info.

affect can be a noun, a verb, or a transitive verb
In summary: affect refers to an influence; an effect is a result (i.e., cause and effect)
From Merriam-Webster online (usage of affect refers to effect; select effect as a transitive verb):
USAGE: Effect and affect are often confused because of their similar spelling and pronunciation. The verb affect usually has to do with pretense . The more common affect denotes having an effect or influence . The verb effect goes beyond mere influence; it refers to actual achievement of a final result . The uncommon noun affect, which has a meaning relating to psychology, is also sometimes mistakenly used for the very common effect. In ordinary use, the noun you will want is effect .
