The emergency brake light in my mini-van turns on intermittently without the brake being engaged. I have tried releasing it many times but, the light stays on. It will turn off by its self every onces in a while, but will turn on again later. The brake is a pedal where the clutch would normally be, and the release is under the steering wheel to the left, if this helps you in anyway.

This light indicates 2 different things. If you have the park brake engaged, it's letting you know. If it goes on while driving (and the park brake is off), then it indicates a problem with your brakes - either unequal pressure between the front and rear brake systems (indicating a leak), or low brake fluid in the reservior.

Get is checked by a mechanic ASAP.

Good luck!

Just as Aussie said, the brake light is on indicating there is a problem with the brake fluid level in your vehicle for the reasons he mentioned.

But it can also mean your brake pads are low causing the fluid in the reservoir to be low. This has happened on my Ford a couple of times and I've checked my pad levels and they were low (around 10-15% pad life). But get it checked out ASAP, you may run into brake failure.

Aussie and Al A raise very good points, you could have a brake problem. You could also have a parking brake switch that is loose or grounding occasionally causing the light to illuminate. If there is no problem with the parking brake switch, found in the parking brake assembly at the left kick panel, have your brakes checked by a professional if you are not confident of trying to find the problem yourself.

it may just be low on fluid because it needs brakes, if it only does it intermittent, is it when your cornering, becasue that can change the fluid level and cause the light to come on

Is the starter making any noise once you try? if so have you ever checked to make positive the motor isn't locked up. If no longer verify the solenoid and the change that keeps you from beginning it at the same time as that's in equipment. attempt putting it in impartial. good success.

FIRST CHECK THE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR LEVEL AND GO FROM THERE.
