To be honest I wouldn't wear a black shirt, it's kind of seedy looking and it almost looks like the gangsters from the 20's. If I were you I would wear either a white shirt or a cream colored shirt and with that either a black silk bow tie or a black or dark gray tie.

Love the idea of black on black. I got my brother to go to a wedding in that combination and it looked awesome. He actually wore a black and white diagonally striped tie with black embroidery on the black sections. Very nice.
I wouldn't go with an entirely black tie, because then what's the point of wearing it? It would just blend in completely.
White would be stark against all the black, which would really pop. Silver would also really pop, and I would suggest you go for a fabric like what's called "liquid metal" if you're going for that. It's really shiny and feels really smooth.
Personally, depending on your colouring, I would go for a nice red, blue or yellow tie. Not something primary-coloured eye-wrenching bright, but as a nice contrast to all the black.
As the holiday season is approaching, you might want to go with red or green, even.
Get a matching pocket-handkerchief no matter what. Help tie it all in together. If you haven't already bought the shirt, some stores sell them in combinations (shirt, tie & handkerchief) and they can usually be bought for a decent deal. My brother got his black shirt and black/white tie that way, only cost him around $25 at the International Clothiers outlet store.

The white tie is going to stand out in a bad way... If you like the purple shirt, keep that and used a black tie. If it is really formal, use a white shirt and black tie. :)

White would be the sexiest. But silver is more fun.
Don't do the black, since you're already wearing all black.
But any color could be okay.
A turqouise or green even.
Stay away from patterns though.
A silk tie would be the best too.
