x = 2

2007-11-18 17:32:03 · answer #2 · answered by Booboo 2 · 0 0

x^2 + 8x --20 = 0
=> x^2 + 10x --2x --20 = 0
=> x(x + 10) --2(x + 10) = 0
=> (x + 10)(x --2) = 0
when x + 10 = 0 => x = --10.
when x --2 = 0 => x = 2.

Simplifying
x^2 + 8x + -20 = 0

Reorder the terms:
-20 + 8x + x^2 = 0

Solving
-20 + 8x + x^2 = 0

Solving for variable 'x'.

Factor a trinomial.
(-10 + -1x)(2 + -1x) = 0

Subproblem 1
Set the factor '(-10 + -1x)' equal to zero and attempt to solve:

Simplifying
-10 + -1x = 0

Solving
-10 + -1x = 0

Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.

Add '10' to each side of the equation.
-10 + 10 + -1x = 0 + 10

Combine like terms: -10 + 10 = 0
0 + -1x = 0 + 10
-1x = 0 + 10

Combine like terms: 0 + 10 = 10
-1x = 10

Divide each side by '-1'.
x = -10

Simplifying
x = -10
Subproblem 2
Set the factor '(2 + -1x)' equal to zero and attempt to solve:

Simplifying
2 + -1x = 0

Solving
2 + -1x = 0

Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.

Add '-2' to each side of the equation.
2 + -2 + -1x = 0 + -2

Combine like terms: 2 + -2 = 0
0 + -1x = 0 + -2
-1x = 0 + -2

Combine like terms: 0 + -2 = -2
-1x = -2

Divide each side by '-1'.
x = 2

Simplifying
x = 2
Solution
x = {-10, 2}

to factor this equation you need to find two factors of -20 that add up to 8
so, the smaller number will be negative, and bigger number will be positive, and the difference between them is 8
factors of 20 are
1, 20
2, 10
4, 5

-2 x 10 = 20, and -2 + 10 = 8, so the factors are

(x-2)(x+10)=0

zero product property: if the product of two numbers is zero, then one of the numbers is zero.

so, x-2=0 or x+10=0

solve, and you get: x=2 or x=-10

x^2+8x-20=0
x^2+10x-2x-20=0
x(x+10)-2(x+10)=0
(x+10)(x-2=)=0
x=2,-10 ANS.

i don't know if you have called it factorising becuase you spelt it wrong or if it is it's name in america but in england we call it factorising, spelt with an s not a z
x^2+8x-20=0
(x-2)(x+10)
x=-10,2
