Lol!!! I never thought about it before, but I think you've got a good point. All that applies to born babies should apply to unborn where thats concerned. Its not like we women don't spend enough during pregnancy! They could share Mummy's social security number until they're born and in cases of miscarriage etc :-( we could just stop claiming. Every bit helps after all. And for the record I'm a Christian so I could probably be considered one of those 'religious fundies' mentioned in one of the answers. :-)

The reason you can get a child credit is because the government reasons that once the child is actually born the family is spending money to care for the child.

Technically, mom IS caring for the child in the womb and paying for medical care. She is eating extra food for the baby and paying a doctor to not just check on her, but the child as well (ultrasound, dopplar, fetal heartrate, etc.).

So YEAH it would be great if you could claim those first 9 months.

I'm all for it! But you realize, if the government finally recognized the fetus as a person it would have to finally grant it rights - including the right to life. I pray for that day to come.

Ha! That's great I agree!! Even in cases of losing the baby it is still a great expense. I showed by husband this question and he advised becoming pregnant in January so you can claim the baby on your taxes for the next year!

Good question! lol!!

I think it's more a matter of the fact that you don't have a dependant life form needing money yet. Yes you spend money on maternity clothes, extra food, doctors bills, etc... but that's still for you, not for the life growing inside you. Until that child is outside, in the world on its own, and reliant on you for food, clothing and shelter, it doesn't count in the tax world.

Would be awesome if it could be counted from conception, though.. but then you have to consider how many people have miscarriages and still-borns.

Because the baby doesn't have a social security number or name yet. Plus there is no guarantees the baby will not miscarry or be still born. But don't get me wrong it would be nice!

It would be political suicide to try to get the law passed with so many people arguing that life begins at birth.

Not everyone believes life begins at conception.
