We do have a hurricane season that begins June 1st through November 30th. We have gone 2 years now without a hurricane, but before that we were hit with 2 in one season. It all depends on the category hurricane. Anywhere prone to hurricanes can have bad ones, not just Miami.

The fact is more people die after a hurricane than during one, by venturing out too soon, downed powerlines, running generators indoors, or from fires due to candles being knocked over. If you're prepared, and follow the instructions given to you by your news station, you should do fine. I wouldn't move out of Miami because it's a hurricane state.

Yes, there are hurricanes in Miami. Miami has the greatest chanced of being struck by a Hurricane in the United States. We have had many hurricanes. Some seasons 0 come and other 2-3 hit us. Sometimes they are Cat1 storms and just cause some minor damage and a few times they can be cat5 storms and destroy areas. For the most part many poeple should not die in hurricanes because you have days of advanced warnings. Hurricane Andrew which was a Cat 5 storm only killed around 50 people. Miami is a city that is used to Hurricanes and is prepared for them. Hence the reason not many deaths occur and building codes are some of the best in the world in South Florida.

Here in Miami we don't freak out about it comparing to what you see on CNN or news in Canada. People know what to get and what to do. This year there was nothing except couple weeks of rain from September until now. People get killed in all kinds of weather anywhere in the word.
