Everything that nowadays poor citizens do: make shoes or pottery, builders, carpenters, merchants, farmers, shepherds, blacksmiths, etc.

Actually carmelo is wrong, pulling oars, especially in war ships were considered a very responsible job and only free citizens were doing it.
The worst "jobs" were in the mines where most of the workers were slave convicts.
