Friction tape might give you a slight edge as it is not slick like old tape, giving you a bit more control over your shot and passing. I believe that is the theory and marketing gimmick.
Black tape is traditional as it may help your teammate's see your stick on the white ice, while your opponent may have a tougher time seeing if you have the puck against the black tape. If you want that latter edge, you should stick to a dark tape.

Tape is tape, basically. The only real difference is friction tape is a bit heavier, and has a bit more "tack" to it. Friction tape tends to get water logged though, because it is thicker, making your stick a bit heavier by the third period.
Tape has evolved just as the game has, and the new stick tape is lighter, and a bit more durable than old style tapes.
I'd use whatever color tape you want, it is really personal preference...
I have seen players tape the stick with white tape, then rub a puck all over it to make it black. Why not just use blace tape then? we are a wierd lot aren't we?

I'm not an equipment expert, but the colour of the tape has to be white if you're a goalie. That's because it's a lot easier to tell if it's a goal on an iffy situation.

I would use black for the blade of your stick because it camofloges the puck. I like yellow for the top, though. Sock tape is like plasticy and shiny and the cloth-like tape that comes in a ton of colors is for your stick.
