we watched the movie in class but my teacher fast fowarded like half of it... so what court did they have to go through first before they to the supreme court and why was taking slaves form Africa illegal??? sorry, all the summaries about the amistad is about the movie...

~Actually, in less than 30 seconds, I found 5 articles on the Amistad affair, including one on the trials. Looking up "Amistad trials" produced more than 100 other relevant hits. Why not go to the Amistad homepage and work from there?

I think that by this stage slavery had been outlawed to the extent that only those born of slaves, and therefore into slavery, were legally certifiable as such in the US. It was illegal to capture or trade in new slaves, and so the whole slave trade by this time "should" have been internal.
And I imagine it was a standard state or provencial court first, then the Supreme when the first case failed.
