They're a waste of money and the environment. You're supposed to use them and discard them, and they aren't washable.
Instead, get a couple of lap pads or travel with an extra baby blanket or 2, and wash them at your destination. With a new baby, you'll be doing laundry often anyway, so it's not trouble to get a permanent changing blanket and re-use.
Congratulations to you!

They are paper, so no, they're not washable. I have some, but most diaper bags also come with a washable changing pad. I use that much more. Or I will sometimes just use paper towels if I am using a changing table in a public restroom.
You don't need them, but on the rare occasion I've used them, they're nice to have. My mom bought me a box of 10, and my daughter is 6 months and we still have 3-4 of them left.

I am milding OCD I think, lol. I am compulsive when pregnant with 'getting everything I need'. The thing is that with this baby I had everything under the sun. I had it ALL. Than something came up and when he was 3.5 months old, I ended up selling everything I owned and taking the kids and one van full 4, 000 miles away! Now I have almost 5 monht old and all we have is a high chair, an exasaucer, clothes, his fancy play pen that I brought along, a car seat, a stroller, a moby wrap that I brought along, a few toys and tellatubby videos, and a diaper bag, diapers and other tioletress. Really, that is all he uses. Hte other stuff I had were taking room and cost money are were not necessary at all.

The are not necessary in my opinion. I have never used them with my 18 month old son, but I do have a plastic diaper pad that came with the diaper bag that I use. The pad is easy to clean and I do not have to worry about running out of them.

I would just buy waterproof lap pads to lay on public changing tables, these are washable and can be re-used. If you find you prefer disposable ones then go for it. In a pinch you can also use a receiving blanket

I like to have at least one in my diaper bag. There are rare occasions where you're in a restaurant that doesn't have a changing table in the bathroom. It's something to lie on the floor to change the baby on then toss in the trash. You can also get a reusable one that you can wipe down and put back in your diaper bag. So no, you certainly don't need them, but it is something that can come in handy. Huggies makes some that come 4 large ones or 8 smaller ones to a package.

No not washable you just throw them away. I have only used them once and dont personally think they are necessary. Normally when you buy a proper changing bag (eg - like a huggies one) you get a small, thin fold-away changing mat that can just be wiped clean. i find these alot easier (and cheaper) and i just take a towel out to dry babies bum with and so it not so cold on the mat for them.

We do what Rosey does- use the diaper changing pad that comes in the diaper bag.
Also, it is easier to change your baby in the trunk or the hatchback of your car than it is the diaper changing station in a store. Now that it is getting colder, that may not be an option, but for future reference you may want to file that away.

Rant away - I do. Give me reasons NOT to rant. It is one thing to not be fiscally responsible. It is fully another to break laws and abuse powers under the guise of 'protecting' us. Take waterboarding. Here we were a leader in stopping torture and thanks to the Bush Cheney regime we are one of it's worst offenders. The Neocons say we got valuable information from it. Even if we did WE BROKE THE LAW. To them laws are trivial, that's why they have such hard ons for dereulation. Worse yet now there are reports they used terror to get inmates to coerce a response that there was a link between Al Qaida and Saddam Hussein. So not only did we break the law but we egregiously broke the law to get FALSE INFORMATION. You should rant - too many people in this country are too f***ing stupid to still figure it out. They put their faith in Fixed Noise and Rushbo the Clown. So back to your core question - they tried to hijack the change message at their convention, which whould had been more appropriately named Nuremberg 2008. Then they bring our Sarah Palin, someone evene less qualified to be president than Bushie. Yeah, that's real change.
