Counterproductive means doing something that stops you from reaching your goal. If you want to fill a sink with water, pulling the plug out would be counterproductive.

Counterproductive means to be doing something contrary to what would be productive. Rather than being helpful, something that is counterproductive creates problems and difficulties.

For example:
1) John is being counterproductive by just standing there while everybody else is trying to work around him.

2) Telling the judge to "shut the hell up" was counterproductive to Mary's defense.

Productive is gaining desired results. Counterproductive is anything done that deters you from that goal.

The goal is to sweep up all the leaves and take them away from the yard. Moving them from one side to the other, without picking them up is counterproductive.
C. :)!!
