Because liberals think drilling for oil hurts the enviornment and we can't have that.

We do have oil. But, not enough to meet our energy needs. That is why we import it. I am afraid that if people think we can just go back to our old wells, and find a wealth of oil just for the pumping, they are badly misguided. It will cost a lot to try to pump our own oil since it will be harder to get it out. Most of our wells are called stripper wells which means that they strip the last of the oil from the old wells. Any new wells will not make up for the decline in the overall decline of oil worldwide. We have found most of the oil deposits here on the North American continent. Mexico is in decline and Canada is trying to use the tar sands to produce oil. The tar sands require a lot of natural gas to heat the water to wash the oil out of the sands. Then you have a disposal problem with the leftover sand. It still contains a lot of oil and it cannot just be dumped anywhere. We will eventually have to fight for any oil we need, it has already started in the middle east, that is why we don't want to leave the region. We are afraid that other countries will come in and take the oil and that would really have an effect on our economy.

A lot of it has to do with royalties, Most oil companies don't want to pay much royalty while getting the oil out from under your land and also they don't like following laws to protect the enviroment, thats one of the reasons Texaco went to central and south America to drill so they could just dump the waste in the rivers and streams and now the water is all messed up down there, really its about profits more than anything else.

The Alaska oil operation is huge - don't you even watch the Discovery Channel? California and Texas oil costs more to extract it than it's worth.

There is a theory that we're bleeding the Middle East dry of oil. Then, when they run out, we'll have all the oil. Not sure how plausible that is, but it's a theory as to why we're not drilling.

It is true that we have significant reserves.

However, they are in sand and shale and don't pump from the ground.

Eventually, we will use this oil but I think it won't be feasable to recover it until the price of gas exceeds $5 a gallon.

I do not understand why we dont do more to move past Oil and Gas all together. You can run a Diesel Engine on the grease leftover form making french fries without making any alterations to the car at all. Just run it through a coffee filter. We need to convert our country to a differnt fuel. It will take a while so we should start as soon as possible on a massive scale.

Congress thinks that oil drilling is so dirty and risky that it shouldn't be permitted here.

that drilling jobs pay very well indeed has no bearing, of course. most of the workers aren't unionized.
