If you travel in near light speed you can travel into the future. However if you need to travel back in time you will have to travel faster than light. But since you need infinite amount of energy to push a matter into light speed or beyond, the only way to travel faster than light is to the warp the space and travel through the distortion. But when you do this, you are not actually travelling faster than light in the physical universe becuase you are doing so through a distortion created in space time. So in fact its possible to travel into the future but not possible to travel into the past and kill yourself like in terminator. What do you guys think?

Thanks zahbudar for your constructive thinking. For your information, a hundred years ago moon was considered a god and worshipped by many and the 40000 kms /hr you speak of was a science fiction back then.

There is no explanation in relativity or quantum physics that says you can travel into the future at near light speed, I don't know where you got that from.
As for the travelling at light speed to travel back in time, it has nothing to do with the energy input needed. It's perfectly reasonable something might be discovered or created to supply enough energy. The problem is related to what would happen to physical properties at that speed.
As for space warping, it THEORETICALLY has potential. String theory for example could allow for the idea of connecting one part of space/time with another in our dimension by traveling through one of the other 10. (For complicated reasons, string theory suggests there are 11 dimensions, or 11 dimensions OTHER than ours, I forget which.) This way you can "touch" one part of our dimension to another allowing you to just cross over to the other point in space/time without having to go to lightspeed. By the way, even this requires the understanding that space/time is one complete construct and that travel of any kind can occur from place to place/time to time.

This whole discussion begins with the statement, "If you travel at near light speed...." which starts off all discussion of your question with something that is impossible. At the present time about the fastest velocity man has been able to accelerate a man made object to is around 40,000 Miles Per "Hour." That is nowhere near the 186,000 Miles Per "Second" velocity which is the speed of light. When you move into phrases such as warping this and jumping from this plateau to that plateau you move from talking about something that is possible into the world of Science Fiction, and Fantasy. Scientific discussions are worthless in that realm.
Godspeed to all that go there...I recommend a toothbrush and change of underwear to go along with your trip ticket.

It may be possible for a being to time travel by the way humans are now should not allow for abilities such as super speed (specifically being faster than light to theoretically travel in time) If there were an outside source that helped you to travel in time (time machine), traveling in time would not work (at least it wouldn't be too much of a colorful life). If you traveled to the past IN the machine, then you would only go back to the moment the machine turned on. You would revert back to your body in the past! You would have the same memory of your past self, making it so that you only remember being in the machine for a few seconds. Life would go in an infinite loop and you wouldn't know it! Now it may be possible to go to the future but not come back to the past with memory of the future. You would go to the future on retaining information over the long time you were in the machine for. *all based up our "normal" concept of time

traveling near light speed does not mean traveling into the future. when something travels at a portion of the speed of light time slows down, at the speed of light time stop completely, so your last part is right if you traveled faster time would reverse.
another theory for traveling into the past also uses light. its possible to get light travel traveling in a circle or a spiral. some physicists think that doing that would infact warp time (like swirling a spoon in a coffee cup) and eventually cause it to look back over to itself. right now they just think they could send back atoms, particles, and information, but it could be used for eventually.
ive never actually heard a theory for traveling forward in time. so id say the opposite of what you asked is true. its impossible to travel forward, but possible to travel back.

The ability to travel back in time implies that the past is changable. This might be possible if the "many worlds" interpretation of Quantum Mechanics is correct. It this model, all possibilities occur, with many futures branching out from the past. In that case, going back in time is like climbing down one of these branches and up another. You' re not really changing "your" present and future, you're simply experiencing an alternative present and future.

There are particles, such as tachyons, which begin by already going faster than the speed of light. The only problem is approaching the speed of light, so it's easier for them to g FASTER, so theoretically, they experience time backwards. Not that they're alive.

the only way currently known is to fly form east to west at a speed greater han the earth's rotational speed i.e. NY to LA in under three hours then you would (in real time) arrive before you left. otherwise it is not known if you can go back, only that you can slow time by approaching the speed of light. superlucent speeds (at this time anyway) are not believed to be possible. hope this helped,Mark

The many worlds interpretation has to be wrong because then there would be worlds where Paris Hilton and Britney are president and VP! Then again after seeing george and dick I guess anything is really possible! I just want to go to the world where kristyco is in love with only me!

i have heard that ufo travels with the speed of light.. if we copy their technique then i think it is possible, but for that . one have to grab a ufo and take the alien out and bring him in a torcher room and every thing will be cleared... lol
