*...Petrol (gasoline), Diesel fuel, Gas Oil (a form of Diesel), are all fossil fuels derived from the fractional distillation of Crude Oil that formed millions ago from fossilised sea life.
*...Natural Gas also associated with Crude Oil, and Non- associated gas (no crude oil produced with it), are also fossil fuels and are used for Industrial and Domestic heating systems.
*...Natural gas and Crude Oil are also refined to produce Liquid Natural Gas (LNG at -165°C), LPG (Propane and Butane) and, all are used for fuels
*...Natural gas is also used in the synthesis if Ammonia and Urea ..and other chemicals.
*...Coal, formed mainly from fossilised trees and vegetation is another fossil fuel also used for heating purposes in Industry and the Home.
*...Fossil fuels formed from the Carbonaceous Organisms (Organic Material) in the Earth, due to High Pressure caused by build up of sedimentary rocks in which the dead sea life and vegetation became buried. This high pressure, together with Heat, Catalysis and Time, in the absence of Oxygen, deep underground, formed the Hydrocarbon deposits.

COAL - solid - formerly for heating boilers, and domestic heating. Largely superseded in the west because of gas emissions.
Coal can be baked in an oven. This releases various gases, ammonia, methane, ethane, etc., sulphur dioxide. Many of these gases were 'scrubbed out' - captured and used industrially. The gas methane and ethane were used in street lighting - Victorian- and gas supply to houses for cookery. The resultant solid from coal being baked is COKE which is used in the blast furnace for iron ore reduction. Coke is an impure form of carbon. During the 'Apartheid' years in South Africa, the South Africans developed an industrial method for converting South African mined coal to oil under the name/term SASOL. Great Britain 'sits on' vast quantities of coal reserves mainly under the counties of S Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The technology for mining this coal and converting it by industrial mean to oil exists, but is not used in the UK due to economic costs.
OIL - liquid - mined in many places throughout the world, notably the middle east, IRAQ &IRAN. Undergoes fractional distillation then catalytic cracking, which the the alkene part is used in polymerisation and the alkane part in reforming for fuels - eg petrol diesel etc.
GAS - - gas- methane, ethane, propane & butane, for fuel.
Coal is economically difficult to move. Oil and gas can be moved by pipeline which is economically much cheaper, and easier and cleaner to handle, hence its large scale use in the modern world. However, there are large deposits of coal worldwide, which are underutilised.
