ive been wondering this for a while, how is the dollar store able to sell items for a dollar? Ive seen stuff like listerine mouthwash there for a dollar, which usually retails at a store for $5-$7 so how is this possible?

My guess is because the products didn't pass QI (quality inspection) from their manufucturer. Such as bad packaging, off centered labels or damaged goods that wouldn't look pretty sitting on the shelves of high end retailers. Therefore these rejects are sold at discounted prices.

I got the Dollar store food for my dog a couple of weeks ago. We were out of town and running late, so I figured it was ok for one or two meals, and for my dog that is the entire bag. I wouldn't feed this everyday though. (His regular food only comes in 40# bags and he had a new bag at home) Also the milk bones sold at the dollar store are $1 for 1#, same brand at Petsmart is $6.99 for 2#

read the labels

to sell for $1, they have to buy it for about 38 cents, 50 cents maximum.

example: brand name toothpaste -- last time I looked, the label was in Spanish and said "hecho en Honduras". Since I have no idea what the health standards for making toothpaste in Honduras [or China or any other 2nd or 3rd world country] are, I decided to leave the stuff right there.

It may not be Listerine. As one responder said, it is made in Vietnam, Honduras, Macao. We don't know what it really is. I, for one, would not put anything in my mouth that came from the dollar store.

I think they import from other countries, e.g. China. Even though it may be brand name, the manufacturer has likely outsourced. Many dollar stores also offer their own generic brand they manufacture for less. Overall, most of their stuff is importated.

Things are made cheaply in other countries, then imported. Most of the time, some things that you think you have a good deal on might actually be cheaper at Wal-Mart or elsewhere.

They purchase the merchandise for less than they sell it for. Often this overstocks, or stock from stores that went out of business.
