When applying for MS or PhD in the US, GRE plays an important role. The score along with your accads, papers, research, work experience along with the department research requirements all play an important role in securing an admit.
If you plan on going from BE to MS/PhD directly, end of 3rd year is the best time. Most universities accept applications Nov. of previous year (for Fall 2009, apply Nov 2008 latest).

I have no fear of the afterlife. I have no doubt that most souls cross over and religion has nothing at all to do with it. I think we all know the fear of hopelessness. I am watching a movie about George Adamson ('Born Free'). There were poachers slaughtering elephants for the tusks and I thought of how helpless we are to protect the animals on this planet from greed. The afterlife is not in question, that I am certain. What matters is what we can do for this world to leave it better.
