I've come to rely upon the Yahoo answer community for a while now for answers to my most probing questions, but this latest urban myth is ridicuolus. Here is the story...

PIN NUMBER REVERSAL (GOOD TO KNOW)
If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an
ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse.
For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321.
The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the
ATM card you placed in the machine.
The machine will still give you the money you requested,
but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched
to help you. This information was recently broadcasted on FOX TV
and it states that it is seldom used because people don't know it exists.

Please pass this along to everyone possible.

I don't know if it's real or not, but one thing I DO know is that computers are literal. If the computer expects your PIN to be 1234, then entering 4321 would be an incorrect entry even though all of the numbers are present. If they are not in the correct sequence, it will not be accepted.

On the other hand, something like that COULD be programmed into the ATM's but whether or not that system has the capability of contacting the police, I do not know. It just doesn't sound plausible to me.

This Urban Legend is a mixture of fact and fiction.

The idea is technically possible and has been supported by some American politicians but never became established.

I never knew that. Doubtful i could remember my pin at all in those circumstances. Backwards would be a challenge. Very interesting though.

I have heard this one and thought yeah right, if calling 999 fails to summon the police when they are needed (in the UK) how on earth is entering your pin backwards going to be any more effective?

lol

Of course, the fatal flaw in this which I'm surprised that nobody else has said, is what about palindromic numbers like 1221? It's not going to work is it!!
