I U is probably better known on a national level and surely because of media coverage related to sports altho their curriculum is competitive with any other college...
For your field of endeavors I would surely recommend Purdue University of Indiana as they excel in that area...
There are two major campuses...one in the FT Wayne area and one in the Idianapolis area. They also have some satellite locations referred to as "career centers" which are more like a vocational school but credits earned there are transferable as like any college credits are...
The advantage of going to a career center is that you can set your own pace and attend classes around a part time job if wanting to. Housing around career centers would be local apartment rentals. If needing "prep classes", a career center would be less costly... Housing around a college is quite expensive and is usually group housing. Dorm students must pre-register for dorm living but does have the advantage of walking versus other means. The closer you are to the college, the more costly the rooms or apartments will be...
My second college choice would be Ball State because of it's extensive career choices which can be individualized and tailored to suit your own endeavors...
Good luck...

This one isn't even close. ISU isn't even in the same class as IU.
US News ranks Indiana University as #75 in the country. They rank Indiana State University as a Fourth Tier National Universities -- which is near the bottom of the category.
As a general rule of thumb, the public universities with "State" in the name are not as good as the public universities without it (e.g., University of Michigan is better than Michigan State, UNC is better than NC State, IU is better than ISU, all of the University of California schools are better than any of the CSU schools).
There are a couple of exceptions -- Ohio State is the best public university in Ohio and Penn State is the best public university in PA.

Definitely Indiana University. Especially since your goal is in the physical sciences, their budgets are much stronger, so they will be able to afford to provide you with the proper labs and field experiences to get a strong background in earth science (usually referred to as geology).
