No, just wean gradually. The less your baby nurses, the less milk you produce, until you stop entirely.

It doesn't hurt when it dries up. It does hurt when you become engorged. In order for your milk to dry up - you need to tell your body to stop producing milk. The only safe way to do that is to no longer express the milk neither by breastfeeding nor pumping.
During the first couple of days your breasts become filled with the milk - which is called being "engorged". At this point you can express a little milk to relieve some of the pressure and soreness - but do not empty the breasts. Use ice packs (When I stopped breastfeeding I used a bag of frozen peas or peas/carrots - these bags mold themselves to your shape as you swell and wane.)
By the third day the discomfort should go away. Wearing a tight fitting sports bra will also help with the soreness and accelerate the process.

It does not hurt at all to when your milk dries up. If you wean too quickly, you may become engorged because for a while your body will be producing more milk than what your baby is using. That can be painful, but it is easily prevented by weaning slowly.
Pills that help your supply dry up haven't been used in the US for years because of very serious side effects, including an association with breast cancer later in life.

Your breasts will get sore but the best thing for me and its no joke was to put frozen cabbage leaves on my breats. The cold helps with the swelling and there must be something in the leaves because my milk dried up quick.

It hurt like bloody hell for me. I weaned her off slowly did the whole cabbage on the breast thing. Felt a little better. There are pills that will help dry up your milk supply but since I was also weaning my daughter @ the time that was something I didn't want to do. Believe me its OK the warmth of having your child next to you and knowing you are doing the best thing for them is best to anything...

If you breastfeed and wean gradually, not usually. But if you dont nurse at all, I woudl think so as you get and STAy engorged longer. Either way it CAN be, but isnt always painful when your milk first comes in.

It doesn't hurt physically but might hurt your pride if you thought you could go on for longer.
Sometimes the baby goes on sucking for ages and ages quite contentedly and then gives a little cry because he or she is still hungry and although the sucking reflex is satisfied, hunger is not appeased.

NOT NECESSARILY WHEN IT DRIES UP, BUT WHEN IT IS PRODUCING...... YOU CAN GET A PILL OR INJUECTION FOR YOUR OB/GYN TO DRY UP THE MILK FASTER...
IT IS PAINFUL WHEN IT IS BUILDING UP THOUGH.... BECAUSE THERE IS NO RELEASE. IF YOU PUMP IT OUT, IT WILL ONLY PRODUCE MORE. SO TO LET IT DRY UP, IT IS THE PRESSURE OF NO RELEASE THAT IS PAINFUL
