Basicly what they want is your interpretation on the poem.
It could give a brief history about the author including the vital statistics if you can research them.
Next your thoughts and opinions on the poem what it meant to you and what the author was trying to convey in your opinion. If you detected what may come across as symbolism of any nature, in your opinion.
Remember back to English Lit, and when a teach,or Proffesor would give you a rundown on a piece of work.
There are literaly thousands of critiques on printed works.
But remember the teacher is wanting your critique.
They are not looking for a critique of Huckleberry Finn from Lional Thrillings.
They want your opinion.

You know, kid, you really break my heart, so I'm going to help you out. Poems are often rhyming verse which present an allusion rather than a direct observation. To write about a poem, you should find one you like--so at least there's an appreciation! The next step is to critique it, which is to say that you try to explain it to somebody else and point out those parts which interest you or to which you would call special attention! You will of course be writing in prose. Try to evaluate it critically although you will have an appreciation of or fondness for it. Try a poem by Whitman, Sandburg, or an English poet (for which critiques already exist), but I'd urge (exhort) you to write your own!

Sure you'll get waaaay better answers than this one but in a nutshell they want you to write about whether you liked the poem and why. Don't know what level this is for but talking about word choice, syntax, themes, rhythm etc usually goes down well. Pick it apart and talk about different elements and what you thought of them/ the effect they had on you from that talk about what the authors intentions were. Ie/ what he wanted you to feel. If the poem is unsuccessful there will be a gap between what he wants you to feel and how it really did make you feel. It's a nice open ended task cause it doesn't ask you to come to any conclusions..Good luck!

Man you've got to love english teachers...any way to make the assignment more vague? "Critical appreciation"...appreciation doesn't always mean gratitude- sometimes its talking about value. Critical makes me think you're supposed to judge/evaluate. So if we translate critical appreciation we can come up with "Judge/evaluate the poem's value."
