Best type of shoes to do ellipticals?

What is the best kind of shoe for ellipticals?

My toes gets numb and my big toes gets sore with the shoe I'm wearing now which is Asics running shoes.

I tore my ACL and had it repaired 2 years ago and also had medial meniscus "cleaned up" at the same time, so I don't want to do any running or high impact workouts to keep in shape.

I wear running shoes, but I keep them loose on that machine. Wear a running shoe with not too much support, just cushioning. And don't tie it up too tight.
