Hi, I'm looking for something special to wear with the holidays, and I think a bowtie would be a really nice change for the more classic necktie. I am not certain though wether I can wear this with a normal white dress shirt. Normally you would need a col-cassé shirt, with a straight collar and little flaps, but I was wondering wether it would also be allright to wear a bowtie on a shirt with a standard collar.
I am also not sure wether to use a normal black suit (WE Men) or buying a tuxedo jacket and trousers at H&M (2x € 20, which is a real steal for a tux)
One last question: is it wrong to dress fancy when most of the other people will wear suits?

I'm biased, as I am a bowtie wearer most of the time - you can wear a bowtie with pretty much any style shirt collar - though you should avoid the cut away or spread collar types -personally I recommend a solid color body for the shirt - blue, pink or yellow would look classy with a white collar and cuffs - should be french cuffs with a nice pair of cufflinks to add a little flair.
The bowtie can be a contrasting color or could match the shirt body color - or how about something in the way of seasonal offering - check beautiesltd for some great options

I've often heard it said that you should always aim to dress at one level higher than the normal - I think you can never be over dressed - as long as you are comfortable with your own choice go for it...

Over dressing is as bad as underdressing for an event. Bowtie only look good in this day and age with a tux. For a tie alternative you can try a bollo or even forego the tie in favor of a nice black suit with a black turtleneck. The all black look is very Manhattan and always sleek when paired with classy shoes and stylish hair.
PS: Nice to know there are men out there that even realize there are fashion mistakes to made!

I would go for white or cream. You don't want to look like the sailor couple at prom!
