get divx (divx.com, it's free)...open the file in divx and drag and drop. It's really easy...I love that program.

EDIT: Open it from the file, open menu. If it is .avi, it is supported, I don't know why it would be saying that.

not enough data to wok on mate:
there are several possibilities:
1. are you able to watch it on your PC? if so, do you mean for your granddaughter to watch it on a DVD player? If so does the player support .avi files, does it incorporate codecs?
2. you are able to watch it on your PC but the player doesn't support avi..in this case you need to convert the film to a compatible format, in this case mpeg2. If so you need to download and install a "avi to mpeg converter", google it...try avi_to_vcd_converter or avi_to_dvd_converter..convert the file..and then, if you use Nero Burning ROM to write disks choose "Make your own DVD-Video" and add the converted file
3. you are unable to watch it on your computer, either the file is a "fake" or it requires you to download some spyware infected player to open..in either cases delete it permanently from your PC

i have download films before from limewire, sometimes they are not the film it should be. Before you give it to your grandaughter make sure you watch it first it could be a rude film.
