I don't know how new it is, globally speaking. I have thought about what it means to worship, and it does seem that what people do in the name of acquiring new stuff, defines worship more completely than what they do in the name of their professed religion.
People put more energy in getting new things than they do into finding some kind of spiritual enlightenment. People are constantly working and saving just to get that next new thing - a new house, a new car, a motorcycle or boat just for fun, ipods and iphones for the whole family, another pair of Kenneth Coles for the closet, etc. etc.
Few of them put that kind of mental or spiritual energy into straightening out their lives and nurturing new friendships. Consumerism is our favorite escape from the banality of our lives.
In my opinion. :)

Yes, unfortunately........we live in a time where everyone wants more and more, and a new car, and more of this and more of that and the lastest styles and the newest gadgets. Without question, in many cases this is all an attempt to fill a hole people have in their lives...... something is missing, and they feel that if they get more stuff, the hole will be filled. But that is not the case..
The Babe said it best.

example:have you ever gone to a wedding, baptism, engagement and so on,without either buying an expensive gift or giving money?
and christmas, name days, easter and so on...you have to spend a small fortune in buying toys and clothes!!
