I don't know that the increase of knowledge -- scientific or otherwise -- has been the factor that's been leading to our demise.
Rather, I tend to think that with increased knowledge has come increased arrogance: many of us think we know everything -- or that we CAN know everything -- rather than understanding that the more we learn, the LESS we actually know, and how far we still have to go.
Also, some people here made some good points about military sciences and the abuse of medicine. Science is, in and of itself wonderful -- but, as history has shown, like religion or anything else, it has become distorted and abused.
This is why I believe in philosophy: it poses questions that probe into the ethical uses of science.

Probably military science has caused misery to mankind. It promotes militarism hence there will always be predicated war. It assembles weapons to be used instead of civilization. It concentrates more of combats rather than having a gunless society. This what Aristotle is driving at why let the youths spend time in marching rather than doing civic activities.
Thanks for asking. Have a great day!

Ironically, it's possibly medicine. During the second World War for instance, the Japanese conducted horrible experiments upon living chinese people. The Nazis also conducted horrible experiments upon Jews. It was all in the name of medical science, and although the results of this were banned from being used by the "winners" of the war, they were used anyhow. There have been other (even more recent) examples of medical tests upon humans in the name of medical science, with fatal results.
The list is endless, but have a look at the following link:

falsly called knowledge, such as evolution, or superiority of one over another, devine rights of kings, might makes right mentality. cliche words or slogans used for manipulation
I think such as terrorists, freedom fighters, our country right or wrong, remember 9/11, axis of evil, using slogans to derail rational thought and conjure up emotions without any basis of fact or that are so ambiguous they need detailed clarification.
whether one is a terrorist or a freedom fighter is determined by which side of the fence your on. by the way terrorist is such an abiguous word one can apply it anyway they want. a criminal who terrorise the neighborhood can be labeled that. so can anyone who speaks the truth about a matter that can cause some people to conjure up scary images. such as if you walk at night you could get raped! which can be true in some neighborhoods, so does that make you a terrorist or just a concerned person trying to warn of a dangerous situation?
so ambiguous words and slogans and cliches are dangerous. if they derail rational thought or are not clarifed, you can run into serious trouble.
but some slogans are catchy enough to get one's interest enough to at least check into it whether it is based on fact or fiction too. if they want to tax us for a good cause why don't they just be honest and stop using fear to get us to hand over our money? why make all the trouble to conjure up fake threats and scaring people to death, after all if you tax us how are we going to stop you? we haven't stop you yet have we? I will let God handle it.
so we are in the generation of scarespeak. it is not scarespeak if the threat is real because there is enough proof or we experience it enough to know it is a real danger to us, like not using seat belts we know enough that we could avoid more serious injury in an accident by wearing our belts. so telling someone to wear seat belts or they will be seriously harmed or killed if they dont' is not scaremongering, or terrorism.
but to say if you drive your car at night you will die because there are boogey men out there so stay home at night. that would be terrorism because the danger isnt real and the threat is actually so ambiguous it can be interpreted in so many ways as to make the idea bogus. it is just to keep you at home because they want the road to themself or some police state can't moniter you in the dark and you could exercise your freedoms without spies watching or you might get away from the plantation.
so let's invent a new word that describes all the hoopla that has no sound science or proof that we can relate to, fear speak, or scarespeak. or we could use terms like phonylogic or fake logicspeak. or maybe doomspeak make up some of your own.

Probably the 'knowledge' of religion.
Science has not caused any misery, only its misuse.
