a gap,,I am installing a tub surround on top the backer board,,,

This sorround is one made to be used with backer board,,not directly attached to the studs

Check the installation instructions for the surround...usually, you have to install the backer board flush with the inside edge of the tub lip so that the surround can slide right down past the lip. In other words, end the backer board above where the tub will meet it so you can position the tub to be under the board in order for the surround to come straight down to line up with the inner edge of the tub lip. You may have to shim the tub lip to attach it to the studs.

You don't put anything on the walls The tub surround gets attached directly to the studs with glue and nails or screws and sits right on the tub.
