Email can be sent by anybody, from anybody and signed by anybody.
If you get a check in the mail, it is real.
Anything else is suspect.

It's a fraud. Turn the check over to the authorities.

sounds like your e-mail address has been scammed and now you will get loads of scam spam and junk coming in .delete it or report it never give details or open suspect mail.
