amutation most likely won't happen
u could have accedently rolled or something and u may have not even noticed, if u do alot of running u could have just been putting alot of stress on ur ankle and relaxing it may have just cause some swelling to heal it. i'm sure the doctor will know for sure
hope it gets better

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

I suspect you're about to loose your foot, my friend.
I would go out & party today because, baby! Tomorrow you're gonna' kiss that foot goodbye.
To help with pain control, take a rubber mallet & smack your right pinky finger every 20 minutes. Immediately afterwards, tie a string around it & pull tightly. This will cause your ankle pain to greatly subside. ;)

i'm not sure of it but i have 2 ideas why you got hurt. first, you said you're just seated at 4pm. maybe, your ankle and the joints of your bone were pressured by the immediate force applied since you are at rest and you suddenly made it move or coerced to stand up. second, maybe your exercises you do regularly are unfit for your age. i am not insulting you though.

Compression bandage, ice pack and elevation. (Cool, I actually DID remember some of my first aid training!)
Our humid summers always trigger off swelling/aches/pains for me, glucosamine helps a lot. It's a bit odd that you don't remember injuring it though...Could it be something you did to it as a kid or a while back?
Honestly it sounds most strange. Definitely go to the doc even if it seems better.

I don't know EXACTLY what is wrong, but icing it and keeping it up for a few days should fix it. An X ray should be done to be sure it isn't broken.

Have you previously injured it? If you injured it in your youth it can come back and bother you. Mine gives me sh!t loads of pain regularly, and when I elevate it for a few hours I can barely walk on it until I take around 20 steps or so

It's probably not that serious. You say you are 46? As we get older our bodies change. You already have arthritus, and thats probably what it is. We start getting little aches and pains as we get older.
