I don't know for sure what all the possible reasons are. One reason I've encountered is they think that the world revolves around them. They think if they are rejected it is an ultimate embarrasment and the whole world is going to hate them or laugh at them. So they try very hard to make you like them.
Or simply they can't handle being rejected.

I have a friend who's borderline obsessed with a girl who just doesn't feel the same way at all. I'm going to have to go with the selfishness theory as well. It's like he doesn't care if she will be unhappy or not, as long as his plan is fulfilled and she pretends to be. He's told me this in conversations before and I would say things like, "omg that's terrible." and he would not seem to care. Perhaps a lack of a good conscience is another cause. I find it hard to believe that someone would be so selfish as to disregard the other person's feelings for their own gain. Also, it could be that they genuinely have feelings that strong and can't survive unless they're with that person. I don't think that's usually the case though. I think it's more often a manifestation of selfishness and perhaps a way to get attention.

idk. i don't know what's wrong with the synaptic nerves that causes either men or women to stalk the same or opposite sex. Really i don't. But it's annoying as all hell, isn't it? Makes you want to stick a fork in your head! ♥
