im trying to sell something using craigslist and this guy says he will pay through paypal and asked me to get back to him with my paypal id. is it safe?

No. What you do is go to Paypal, press the button for "Request Money" and send him an invoice. Then he can pay through paypal. You don't need to give him your ID. Also, when you need to give him the item, either meet in a public place or mail it to him. If he's legit, he won't mind meeting in the local police department's public parking lot, will he? Otherwise, be wary of meeting strangers: they can steal everything from you.

The worst thing he can do with your paypal email address is send you money. Regardless if you do a money request or invoice your email address will still be provided to him. As long as you don't give out passwords or other sensitive information nothing bad can happen on that front.
