well if you've played baseball, you would know that he yells for you to get back during the pickoff. he has to focus on the pitcher to help out the baserunner. also, when the signal has been given for a steal, the coach watches the pitcher and when he sees the pitcher will not make a pickoff attempt, he quietly yells for you to go (steal the base)

First base coaches have A LOT to do. They tell you when to pick up signs from your third base coach, although at higher levels, that becomes second nature to the player. They look for defensive alignment in able to determine when and if he should in fact keep waving the baserunner. He gets a feel for the pitcher - his pickoff move, how much time he takes between pitches, is he consistent with his release on off speed pitches and fastballs. Is he tipping pitches.. etc... He is able to help the runner with tagging to additional bases and when to get back if the ball is caught. Also, on a hit and run, if the ball is in the air or on the ground, the first base coach is there to let that runner know where the ball is and to pick up his third base coach while rounding second.
Hope this helps

First off the first base coach is VERY important in a game. He gives you that second of winning the tagout of the base. So you dont have to look if there throwing, u can just know right away to run though or to turn and look. The coach is also there for support. And if you dont see the third base coaches sign you can say "time" and ask the First base coach. =]
Very helpful!!!

Any player or any true fan would tell you the 1st Base Coach is a vital part of Base running. As Coaching goes it's where alot of Managers get there start at.
When a players get's an extra base hit the 1st Base Coach let's know the proper base to go for be it 2nd or 3rd. In this day and age of sign stealing sign are relayed from the bench (Manager) to the base coaches, to the player.
The first base coach is ultimately responsible for most of the close plays at second base. Knowing the players speed, and the defensive set up. If he wasn't there you would have alot of players getting thrown out at second, and for anybody who has ever played the game we all think we are faster than we really are.....

He tells you when to get back to the base on a pick off.
He also holds the base runners equipment like batting gloves.
He keeps a stop watch to time the pitcher delivery time(when he lifts his leg up until the catcher catches it) and catchers pop up time(the time he catches till the time the ball is received at second). For instance if the pitcher throws a 1.3 and the catcher's pop up time is 2.0 than a guy that runs a 3.2 should be able to steal a base with the correct jump.
