I think it's a wonderful, wonderful surprise and a gift with good intentions. The spouse who bought the house however, did a wrong thing though by denying the other spouse the chance to have a say in how much debt they would now be incurring and to have a say in the style and location of the house. I can see the potential for hard feelings among both spouses in such a situation.

My opinion, no. That's something you choose together, a place that is agreeable to both parties. Especially if you are both going to be paying the mortgage. Now, I suppose it's another story if the buying spouse is rolling in the dough, and just paid for it outright. If that be the case, I suppose the other party should just shut up, and be happy that they are loved and well taken care of, so my answer, no, but a possible yes depending onthe circumstance.

It's the biggest purchase of your life and I think both people should be part of the decision making process.
But if you were looking for a house and found the perfect one........then they purchased it without your knowledge and went through all the red tape (which is a pain), it might be a nice surprise.

i'd be more concerned with how "we'd" pay for MY house. you can't buy a house without your spouse knowing.
