You can use it to do anything: move things, heat up things, create new materials, break materials, etc. For all these things energy needs to be transported according to law of conservation of mass and energy and second law of thermodynamics. Energy remaining at one place can do nothing. While transporting, some part of it will get dissipated and cannot be got back in the same form. Technically it is said that energy is conserved and it runs down hill. Funnily I say that energy has two aspects: bondage and wastage. As long as it is bound it is of no use moment you start using it part of it has to be necesarrily wasted [not destroyed, please note].
