The best thing for kids in divorce, is to have both parents grow up and get along for the children's sake. I think it is better for them to live with one parent, but still have visitation and a relationship with the non residential parent. Just because the parents could not get along anymore, does not mean the children should suffer. Both parents have to get along and agree on issues, discipline, medical issues, etc with the kids. If you don't you will spend a lot of time with the kids playing one parent against the other.

It works on a case by case basis.

If we take Britney Spears case, K-fed will get the kids and BS may come and visit, but not have real custody of the kids

Stability.
The reasons are simple: Harmony between the parents in joint custody, or ANY joint decision concerning the child, obviously isn't possible. After all, if they could work things out, they wouldn't be divorced.
