At this time of year they probably aren't gnats, they are fruitflies. It's easy to tell if they are fruitflies, they have bright red eyes. Now you're wondering how the heck you're supposed to check. If you look at one while it's on a surface you'll be able to see the eyes very easily. You're first defense is to clean the sink drain, they like to breed there. Any drain cleaner will do, but since you're expecting get someone else to do it for you. Also, check the sewage drain in your home. Make sure there is no standing water (soaking dishes, milk glasses, etc.). Also, make sure that any bread products that are out are sealed completely. They get into even the smallest gap in bread ties! Don't leave wet sponges on the sink after you've cleaned. Keep your fruit in sealed containers or in the fridge until you get rid of the little buggers. The easiest and fastest way to get rid of them completely is to use an insect fogger from the hardware store. It will require the home to be empty of people and pets for a minimum of three hours and another hour for airing the house out. Again, get someone else to do it for you. When you return home, vaccuum everything (empty the canister or bag) and wash all counters and surfaces. That should take care of them.

I just had this same problem. First of all find out where they're coming from! They're also known as fruit flies. Check around for rotten foods. I had old potatoes in the pantry. (YUCK) After you get rid of the source they usually go away pretty quick, like a week or so.

Clean your kitchen - use a little bleach while you are at it. Look for and find any rotting fruit, infested plants (check the soil in your plants if you have plants), and compost the fruit and treat or compost the plants, too. Gnats or fruit flies that have nothing to feed on won't stay around.

Don't use insecticides. Those chemicals don't just "disappear" from your home.

Take a piece of tape or a fly strip and hang it from the ceiling. Also make sure none of your fruit is roting or they will just be back

1) keep your kitchen clean.

2) do not leave food or liquids around.

3) cover garbage.

4) buy several fly traps and use them

5) keep your screen closed.

note if you buy bananas and they become over ripe, fruit fly eggs found in banana skin will, hatch and become mature fruit flies.
