The causes of superstitious beliefs are words being passed on through the generations and folks taking those words as gospel; but, some of them are partial truths and some just told to scare folks into doing what you want them to for some cause or another. Some of the effects are a total disaster.

Case in point: Someone said that you can't get pregnant while you're on your period. Or you can't get pregnant if he pulls out. There are just too many superstitious beliefs you'd almost have to go on a case by case basis.

The foremost thing is that the cultures are generally brought forward by rich and popular people. For example we have a belief that when we do chores in the name of our late parents cat should not be around. When I traced this tradition back then it was found that Maharaja(king) in some time was doing chores in the name of his father; at the mean time a cat showed up and started to eat foods that were supposed to be given in the name of his father; king ordered the cat be tied until the chore was over.
After this act the tradition is to tie the cat when it shows up in such type of chores.
This tells us that generally the histories and traditions are made by rich and popular people and are followed by all without knowing the real story.
However if we talk about the cause; it can be much serious like one might even loose life thinking the person is a witch which is a common story in south asia.

Nothing all that is happening is the person believes that a certain outcome will occur due to behaving in a ritualistic like fashion

Early studies were conducted by Skinner on pigeons. The pigeons acted in a ritualistic like behavior and believed acting this way is what caused them food. even though if the bird did nothing they still got food.

Ritualistic behavior tends to become extinct after a period of time but generally is just replaced with another ritualistic behaviour.

Being a believer in the supernatural.

It happens when someone experiences something and passes it on.

Eventually it gets blown out of proportion, and then you have a legend.. Like.. Freddy Krueger or something.

I think there is truth to lots of it.

superstition, according to science, is a product of evolution. Basically, it helps people explain all the crazy crap that goes on in this world. Religion explains all that crazy stuff, too. So, you can look at it either way.

Behavior modification, life alterations, ritual additions, respect to other religious ways in order not to offend, hell man it depends on the actual superstition. Just because your unsure of something, doesn't make it false. ;)
