No. Contracts are legally binding agreements. Having a background in law I know that these things can be very complicated. The number of games played, the deferment of salaries, possible injuries, and benchmarks needed to be reached by the players. Timeframes for all occurances and the simple literal ENGLISH as to what word is used when and how. One has to be a master of law, English, and negotiation to pull a solid contract off. Most ballplayers are not that smart (hence baseball scholarships), or are from other countries (hence don't speak English), and they need a person to represent them. It helps teams as well since they can deal w/ 500 agents instead of 15000 baseball players. (my numbers are exaggerated there but you get the point)

It just simply makes sence. If you wanna hire a pro to hit the ball you find someone who can hit the ball. If you wanna hire someone to get a great deal, you hire a dealmaker. You don't pay your accountant to change your oil do you?

Not really - would you know how to negotiate a contract?

Baseball contracts are complex legal documents. Few baseball players have any legal training whatsoever - many didn't even go to college. For many, it's worth it to pay someone else to do the negotiating and make sure the contract isn't weighted too far in the team's favor.

Many baseball players have little or no knowledge of the negotiating / legal processes involved and / or don't have the time. Most baseball owners and GM's are professional businessmen and / or have a strong legal background. Personally, I think agents are parasites and should be thrown out of pro sports. Players should have legal representation for negotiations but most agents are only interested in their commissions and not the best interests of the players they represent.

You can pretty much hire someone to negotiate any contract. Doctors can hire people to negotiate their contracts. These people can structure your contract so that you avoid paying taxes and things like that. For instance bonus' are taxed at a higher rate then income. So you try to strive for more income then bonus. Thats why you hire an expert - they know all the short cuts.

it's the same as when you go to court, and bring a lawyer. you could tell your own story/defend yourself, but the lawyer knows preocedure, what to say and not say, and the letter of the law.
